Just a little something

This week my little Emmie had her usual PT. She is physically doing super. I have no complaints, she's really moving along beautifully. Speech Therapy on the other hand and OT I'm not so impressed with. Emilia refuses to play appropriately. For example she will not put objects into a bucket. She white knuckles them. I guess she figures , why would I want to let go of something I just picked up. Her receptive and expressive language, not so good. She really doesn't understand what we are saying to her. Today with her ST, she dropped a block!!!! And immediately picked it back up. As if to say. "Look I can do it I just really don't want to."It was super. And she did it again and again.

I've been signing with her and repeating things...over and over and over!!! Any hoot, today while she was eating breakfast, I am constantly sign "more" and "all done", at appropriate times. Today I asked(signed) more? Well, she opened her mouth! Right on cue. She understood! And we play up and down. I pick her arms up and bring them down. Today she held my fingers and as I said up, she guided my hands up. And did the same for down.

And one last thing. She turned the page of her book!!!! This is awesome. She anticipates something coming. She knows there is more to the book than just what she can see.

Today was a huge day in our house!

Awesome, very awesome. Don't sweat the white knuckle bit. Very common. Not necessarily a matter of refusing to let go. Has to learn to let go. But it sounds like she's gotten the idea now! She will work these things out at her own pace and in her own order. Do you ever use the older kids to model behaviors for her,? like these actions are a game. Kids with Downs usually learn quicker through imitation. Actions that seem like one motion for us may involve several steps when you slow them down, you know? Just a suggestion. But she is doing very well, I hope you know how well.

Way to go Miss Em.All you little ones are really finding your way.All in your very own time. Not ours and that is the one thing all of us mommies must remember from time to time.

*Zoey has the OPPOSITE problem with objects. She chucks everything, everywhere .... container play and her is a no go!I even have the cutest containers, like the singing cookie jar and she just throws those shapes everywhere!

Thats really great Emmie, way to go! It takes time and sometimes we wonder when are they going to do this or that, but I too have really accepted and understood we just cannot hurry them along, only carry on being persistent and keep at it patiently.
Saira seems to have her own language and different sounds, tones and volumnes indicate different things...and yes we are expected to know them all, in the meantime I do! I need to sign more consistently with her. She loves to play with objects and does take things out of containers, and sometimes puts them back in, other times just flings them across the room, as she wishes really!
Our little ones can surprises us too by suddenly showing us how much they know.

How exciting! That's really assuring when you realize she's "getting it" and responds appropriately to what you're asking or saying. I, too, was thrilled when JM first turned pages in a book. Now he even turns the book the right side up, which shows that he's aware of the pictures and the correct way they should go. Keep up the good work!

That is sooooo great!!!! I have been so frustrated as well with the signing but yesterday, in fact I need to blog about it but Sam signed "More". I about fell off my chair. Yeah for all the great things she is now doing.

Stephanie, y'all are doing GREAT by Em. Don't even worry about it. Above all, she is loved. With all the therapy and doctor visits, you can get to feeling like she's a science project or something if you aren't careful. You know she's a member of the family, not a diagnosis. Just take it as it comes, and don't sweat all the developmental timetables and such. There is so much variety with our little kids with Downs. Cheer her on, as I can tell you do. Try to see things from her perspective. And enjoy the hound out of her! Y'all are doing terrific!
Love, Liz

Yay for days like this! Carter just signing more and I just love it - his first word!! They just do things on their own time schedule and there is no way to persuade them otherwise! She is adorable!
